- Curriculum Vitae:
Wolfgang L. Zagler was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1951. He obtained his diploma
degree in Electrical Engineering in 1976 and joined the Institut fuer
Industrielle Elektronik und Materialwissenschaften. His first activities at the
institute centred around research and development of automatic seam following
devices for precision welding equipment using optical pattern recognition. For
this engagement he received his doctor´s degree in 1989.
In parallel to his studies in industrial pattern recognition he applied elements
of this technology to develop a reading machine for assisting blind and visually
impaired persons incorporating optical character recognition and document
analysis. This pilot project in rehabilitation engineering not only laid the
foundation for a number of ambitious projects in the field of assistive devices
for blind and visually impaired persons but also for establishing a permanent
ten-person Working Group on Rehabilitation Technology called ´fortec´.
Today the R&D activities not only cover assistive devices for blind and
visually impaired persons but also for speech, hearing, motor and multiple
impaired people and for elderly persons.
